PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour won by Dutch student
A Dutch college student, Joeri Zandvliet, has been crowned as the winner of the opening British event on the fresh PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT). He won GBP 63.200, as he also received admission to the EPT London event, which awards GBP 5.250 and it will be the season finale to the UKIPT. Furthermore, he will place first on the Season 1 UKIPT leader board, which will offer GBP 60.000 in prize money to the top 100 players over all events from the first season, while the number one placed finisher will walk away with all their buy-in and hotels for the second season.
Dutch college student
The Dutch college student needed only seven minutes to defeat Jack Ellwood in the heads up battle. Zandvliet had a 2:1 chip lead, as all the chips went in pre flop with the Dutchman, who had pocket nines, while Ellwood had ace queen. Despite a queen arriving on the flop to put Ellwood ahead, a nine on the river gave Zandvliet the title as well as the GBP 63.200 prize money.
Zandvliet, a 21-year old college student from the Netherlands, was obviously very pleased to win his most important live tournament so far. The Dutchman came to the table third in chips and had to deal with hard competition from the other players of the final nine, as he spent more than eight hours at the final table. The college student was delighted and commented: “I experienced a wonderful feeling of happiness and luck. The final table featured five rather strong opponents. I didn’t play very well today but with some luck I managed to pull it of. I would also like to mention the outstanding structure and organization of the tournament.”
Nick Wealthall, UKIPT host, commented: “We were really surprised by the reception in Manchester. We didn’t expect so many players for the initial British event, and we were astonished. The tournament and the final table demonstrated an amazing high level. We have seen several poker players from which we surely will hear a lot in the future. We are all seeking more records at the next events on the tour.”
Poker education seminar
518 players participated, while 279 PokerStarsplayers entered the opening GBP 500 + GBP 50 buy-in UKIPT Manchester event, resulting in a GBP 259.000 prize pool and the biggest tourney ever in Manchester. The PokerStars also enjoyed an unique poker education seminar, which was hosted by Nick Wealthall, fresh Team PokerStars PRO Julian Thew and EPT presenter Michelle Orpe. The seminar discussed what a big live tournament means for online qualifiers and the switch from online to live play. The expertise provided by Julian and Nick noticeably helped the attendees, proved by the fact that a number of them went onto cash in the event, such as Mark Warnock, who was chip leader on day 1.
The tournament also starred ex-Old Trafford striker Teddy Sheringham and current Scottish Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher. Team PokerStars Pros Vicky Coren won GBP 1.650 as she finished 25th, while Julian Thew and John Duthieals also competed in the tournament.
