Sri Lankan government regulates land-based gambling
Sri Lanka has legalized gambling at offline casinos. Asian countries are not renowned for their progressive attitude towards gambling. In that respect, the move by the Sri Lankan government can be defined as a progressive one. As Sri Lanka is creating a regulated gambling industry, legalizing online gambling seems a logical next step.
Sri Lankan policymakers recognized the importance of casino gambling. Actually, the government prefer to regulate and control the gambling industry instead of banning it. In addition, a regulated casino industry allows the government to protect citizens against the risks of gambling. The legalized casino gambling landscape will be in force as of 2011. Betting parlors
and casinos have to acquire official gambling licenses to remain in operation.
The progressive move by the Sri Lankan government has resulted in a lot of resistance. Joseph Michaael Perera, member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, believes that the government is regulating an unlawful activity. Perera compares legalizing gambling with legalizing prostitution.
