New York-New York Casino

It may not be the biggest casino on the Strip, but what the New York-New York lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in character. Built to resemble the iconic Manhattan skyline of the Forties, the casino has quickly become one of the most unique sites in Vegas since it opened in 1997.

It may not be as famous as the likes of the Venetian, Caesars Palace or the MGM Grand, but its unique styling certainly makes it stand out – ensuring that the New York-New York has become something of an iconic sight on the strip.

As easy as N-Y-C

New York-New York casino floorThe New York-New York’s origins can be traced back to 1994, when MGM and Primadonna Resorts unveiled plans to launch a new casino together. This went on to become the New York-New York, which officially opened for business on January 3, 1997.

As the name suggests, its styling owes much to the American east coast’s most iconic city, although not in the modern sense. As opposed to trying to recreate the city of the Nineties, New York-New York is actually designed to resemble the city as it was in the Forties.

Nevertheless, this connection with NYC took on a deeper meaning in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. People (especially those from the emergency services) from around the country started sending tributes to the casino. Eventually, these were incorporated into a permanent display on the casino’s grounds – a poignant reminder of the lives lost on that day.

The resort last underwent renovation work in 2006.

Gambling in the Big Apple

Although it’s not biggest of Las Vegas’ famous casinos, at 84,000 square feet, New York-New York’s casino floor is far from the smallest, either.
The casino’s 67 tables offer a blend of all the popular table games, including:

It also offers more than 1,500 slots, which range from old-school classic mechanical machines, to the latest video slots and licensed games, such as Sex & the City.

Sports and race betting facilities are also available.

For those looking to party in style, there’s also the Party Pit. Aimed at bachelor and bachelorette parties, this offers the chance to gamble while surrounded by sexy professional dancers.

Bringing Broadway to the desert

New York-New York CasinoThe New York-New York offers a wealth of entertainment options, ranging from the sort of shows you’d expect to find on Broadway, to Latin music, to the more risqué charms of Zumanity, the adult-only show laid on by the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil.

Much like New York itself, the resort is also well stocked for bars, with eight of them to be found within the grounds. And with 12 food outlets, ranging from buffet bars and cafes to steakhouses and fine-dining restaurants, there’s no shortage of ways to satisfy your appetite.

Additional attractions include the recently upgraded pool area (including a whirlpool), an extensive selection of boutiques and shops, a spa and salon, and of course, the resort’s rollercoaster. This behemoth rises up 203ft, and reaches 67 mph. A barrel roll is also featured.

But it’s the resort’s unique styling that makes it something of a tourist attraction in its own right. A sort-of ultimate miniature city, the levels to which New York-New York has gone to recreate the actual city are stunning.

Wander around, and you’ll see recreations of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, along with recreations of the Statue of Liberty, the Soldier and Sailors Monument and Grand Central Station. While a man-made lake represent New York Harbor.

A night in New York

Unlike many of Vegas’ casino resorts, the New York-New York is aimed more at the cost-conscious gambler. Most of its rooms are priced at significantly less than $100 a night, and some start from as little as $55.

That being so, there are still deluxe suites and penthouses available for those looking to splash a little more cash.

All rooms come with a TV, a luxurious bed and bathroom, and internet access. Snacks, sweets, drinks and gifts can also be ordered from room service.
